Yesterday was the second 2 mile race in the BRASS Summer Series. For those that don’t know, BRASS is the Houma-Thibodaux area’s running club. (Bayou Runners Association). Their website is here.
The June dash was held at a member’s house, but this dash was held at a local chiropractor’s office in Thibodaux. 15$ got you an entry in both of the races and a cool tee shirt.
There was one thing different about this race for me: I ran “naked” ! What I mean by that is that I did not wear my Garmin. Ever since my first 5K race in 2010, I had used either the Nike + or the Garmin. This time, I loaned the Garmin to my husband, Jacob. He’d been working on his speed lately, and I wanted him to be able to see what it was like running with the Garmin.
Here are a few pictures of me and our crew before the race began.
That’s me and my husband, Jacob.
Me and my awesome running partner, Jessica. One day I will be able to pull of a running skirt like her. And yes, we do sometimes coordinate our race colors!
My mother in law walked her first race in the June Dash of the Summer Series. This was her second one.
At the start of the race, I tried to stick with the pack that was cruising pretty fast, and then I eventually ended up slowing down. I was at a good pace with one guy for the first mile or so, but he got ahead. I tried my best not to turn around and look what/who was behind me. It went by really fast, and when I got to the point where I could actually see the finish, I sprinted as fast as I could. I probably could have pushed myself harder for this race, as always, but I really enjoyed myself during the run.
The race had a blackjack theme. You pulled a card before you started the race, at the one mile mark, and at the end. That’s why the “after” pics show us posing with our cards!
Jacob’s time was 14:57. He wanted to keep his time under 15 minutes, so way to go Jacob!! He shaved off about a minute from his time at the June Dash.
As for me, I finished in 17:45. At the June Dash, I did 17:42, but I had a Garmin that time. This time, I had no clue how fast I was going! It was actually kind of refreshing to run “naked.” It allowed me to just enjoy the run and not be looking down at my watch every two seconds. (I’m neurotic!)
Jessica kicked butt with her time. I can’t remember the exact time, but it was less than 16 minutes!
Check us out! We both had 20! (But someone else had 21… shucks!)
As for my mother-in-law, she improved her walking time by a whole minute from the last race and snagged this sweet medal for 2nd in her age group!
Woo Hoo!
Oh, and since I love race tee shirts, I have to show off this one. It was a tech tee, and in a color I don’t have much of.. orange!
Cool looking, huh?
It’s always fun getting to be part of the community and interacting with other runners. I have done at least one race per month since last October, so I will be posting another re-cap in August, for sure!
