Keep your eye on the prize AND the road: Sport – iiii’s

Technology based distractions are everywhere these days, none more prominent then texting while driving. It has become the leading cause of automobile based accidents. These distractions can also be found taking over in endurance sports.  “What’s my pace?” “What’s my heartrate?” The NOW mentality of information can take over your run.

There are two downsides to this. First, spending too much time looking at your watch during a run or bike can be very dangerous. Taking your eyes off the road or trail for even a second can mean tripping on a root or a pothole, or a collision with a car, or another person. Secondly, constantly checking your watch can also mean a loss in form, pace and greatly effect your ability to hit that PR you are going for.

Enter: Sport-iiiis

Sport-iiii’s mount to most pair of sunglasses to provide you with a head’s up display. (HUD) It can be programmed to work with most ANT+ devices to give rider’s instant feedback on pace, power, cadence, speed, and heart rate. This information is provided to you by a speaker near the ear and by colored-LED displays visible at the lower edge of the glasses lens. The LED works by showing you where in a target range you currently are. To slow and a red light to the right will blink, spot on and the green light in the middle would blink. (Much like a guitar tuner would work for those musicians out there) You can set your own ranges to make the zones as narrow or as big as you would like. If you want specifics it will also give you an audible update of your exact pace, heart rate etc. The device can be setup and customized exactly how you want it. You can turn off audible alerts and set how often the LED blinks too.

From VeloNews: “Sport-iiiis inventor and founder of 4iiii Innovations Ian Andes had an “aha” moment when running (yes, on foot). His wristwatch Garmin told him he was running seven-minute miles, a significant milestone for him, and while fixating on his watch, he tripped over a curb and injured himself badly.” Sport-iiiis give you the information you need, as safely as possible, while you get to keep your eyes on the road. They go on sale in early November and will cost $199.99.

What do you think? Are Sport-iiii’s a product that would be helpful to you while training, or just an unwanted distraction? Ever had any “I just looked at my Garmin and fell flat on my face” stories?

I’ve never heard of this product before, and I have to say I’m really impressed. What a cool idea. Unfortunately, the price is more than I paid for my Forerunner 405 (with HRM!). I’ve only been using a watch for a couple months, but I’ve been lucky to have had zero accidents. I’ve had a couple near-falls on some typical New Orleans sidewalks and on the streetcar tracks, though, but not due to paying attention to my GPS.
