With the largest community support in the history of Girls on the Run of Greater Baton Rouge, more than 1,000 people attended the Run Louisiana Girls on the Run 5K this past Saturday, May 5, 2012.
Community runners, supporters and Girls on the Run participants pulled up to Pennington Biomedical Research Center for a full morning of pre- and post-race activities, including the greatly anticipated 5K. As several hundred Girls on the Run participants embarked on their first ever 5K, inspiration and excitement ran high.
After an energetic Zumba warm-up the runners were ready and took off from the starting line. The course was full of young girls and their running buddies, family members, and members of the Run Louisiana community. The route followed around the entire facility, including a scenic pathway alongside a lake behind the Center.
Hand-in-hand girls in custom bandanas, “I rock!” “Strong” “Confident,” came across the finish line to a crowd of cheering fans and volunteers handing out colorful finishers’ medals.
The day was truly a celebration of the joys that running brings to the community. Run Louisiana grew to include a new generation; a group of young runners that embrace running as a lifestyle to bring forth joy, happiness and confidence. With eighty-five volunteers representing numerous organizations and the support from the local community, even more were able to witness the inspirational event.
