Longtime distance runner Shelley Armstrong comes from a very active family in shreveport. She and her husband are very passionate about endurance sports and both participated in the 2012 Firecracker Road Race held in Shreveport on the 4th of July. It was this passion that drove Armstrong to develop the Youth Fit Program.

We caught up with Armstrong the day before the race to spend a day learning about her program. Due to school, the Youth Fit program starts at 6p at Betty Virginia Park. On a typical week day, Armstrong stated that you could expect all 60 kids in the program to show up. Since it would be a short day, the usual workout was more of a game of tag so the kids would not be tired before participating in the Firecracker the following day.

The Youth Fit program was developed to provide youth with skill and fitness instruction for successful long distance running. Shelley Armstrong believes that teaching the foundations and strategies for health and fitness associated with running is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Fundamental knowledge skill development, proper progression, lead-up games and seminars provide YOUth FIT participants with an opportunity to emphasize development of long distance running and health in a fun and stimulating environment.
