Overnight rains meant cooler temperatures to welcome runners for the Baton Rouge Zoo’s 7th Annual Zoo Zoom on Saturday, August 25th. BR Zoo spokesperson Mary Woods reported that roughly 600 runners turned out for the 5k and half mile kid’s race presented by Club South Runners and the Baton Rouge Zoo.
Annually, the race celebrates the close of a hot Summer training season and the beginning of Fall half marathon training for many. This year’s updated course began with a single loop through the Zoo parking lot followed by shaded loops through the Zoo; complete with passes by zebras, elk, alligators, monkeys, exotic birds, pygmy hippos and many more zoo residents.
One of the highlights of the new route was a trail loop through BREC’s recently renovated Greenwood Park. And many lucky runners got an up-close view of the Zoo’s new baby zebra, Olympic.
Nick Accardo was the first place finisher overall with a time of 16:25. The first place female finisher was Velma George with a time of 22:08.
